Fisheries, exploring the ocean treasury......

Fisheries are one of the allied sciences of Agriculture. Importance of fisheries is increasing due to its consideration as the best source of animal protein which supports food and nutritional security of people in India and Worldwide. As a meaning, fisheries consist of catching of fish species for marine and inland. But, in reality it includes catching, processing, marketing and conservation of fish. The scope of fishery has expanded over the years.

Fisheries Science is an academic discipline of managing and understanding fisheries. This is a multidisciplinary subject that includes the biological study of life, habits and breeding of various species of fish. It also involves farming and husbandry of important fishes and aquatic organisms in fresh water, brackish water and any marine environment.

The rapidly developing fishery industry provides employment not only to the traditional fishermen, but also to the highly skilled personnel engaged in the scientific breeding and management of fisheries. The new era of biotechnology in fisheries has paved new way to these studies as DNA fingerprinting etc. The scope in the field of fishery science is increasing with the development of brackish water and freshwater aquaculture.

Increasing consumer preference and demand for value added food products in the society has promising the role of fisheries in the field of post harvest technology. The improvement in post harvest technology viz., processing and value addition will help the consumers to access readymade fish products. The level of enhancement in value addition will also support the seafood processing industries to be viable and contribute to India's export earnings.

Due to climate change, the technology modification to the changing environment and conservation aspects of fisheries open a new chapter in fisheries science. Studying fisheries is a lively experience of being aquatint with the nature and a chance to contribute the conservation of fishery resources towards sustainability.
