India Inaugurates BHARATPOL Portal, Heralding a New Era in International Investigations

Union Home Minister and Minister of Cooperation, Shri Amit Shah, inaugurated the BHARATPOL portal, developed by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi. This innovative platform marks a significant milestone in India’s fight against transnational crimes, fostering seamless collaboration with INTERPOL and its 195 member countries.

The event was graced by dignitaries such as the Union Home Secretary, the Director of the CBI, and the Secretary of DoPT. Shri Shah also honored 35 CBI officers with prestigious awards, including the President’s Police Medal for Distinguished Service and the Home Minister’s Medal for Excellence in Investigation.

A Technological Leap in Crime Control

In his address, Shri Amit Shah emphasized that under the visionary leadership of Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, India is entering a new era in international investigations. He highlighted that BHARATPOL is a revolutionary step that will integrate all Indian law enforcement agencies with INTERPOL’s global network, enhancing the ability to combat crimes such as:

  • Drug trafficking
  • Arms smuggling
  • Human trafficking
  • Cybercrime
  • Cross-border terrorism

The portal, powered by five key modules—Connect, INTERPOL Notices, References, Broadcast, and Resources—ensures seamless communication and data sharing among agencies, both domestically and internationally.

Key Features of BHARATPOL

  1. Connect Module:
Law enforcement agencies across India will function as an extension of INTERPOL’s National Central Bureau (NCB-New Delhi). This ensures swift and secure data transmission for locating and apprehending criminals worldwide.

  2. INTERPOL Notices:
Agencies can issue Red Corner Notices and other alerts in real-time, significantly expediting international investigations.

  3. Resources Module:
Facilitates document management, capacity-building initiatives, and knowledge sharing among agencies.

  4. Access to INTERPOL Databases:
The portal offers access to 19 specialized INTERPOL databases, enabling officers to analyze data, develop crime prevention strategies, and track fugitives more efficiently.

  5. Trial in Absentia:
Introduced under India’s new criminal laws, this provision allows for the prosecution of fugitives even in their absence, simplifying extradition processes and ensuring fair judicial proceedings.

A Vision for India’s Future

Shri Shah linked the portal’s launch to India’s broader aspirations under the Amrit Kaal initiative, which envisions a fully developed nation by 2047. He underscored Prime Minister Modi’s goal of making India the third-largest economy by 2027 and positioning the country as a global leader.

The Union Home Minister emphasized that modernizing systems like BHARATPOL is vital to tackling global challenges, enhancing transparency, and elevating the efficiency of law enforcement. He urged the CBI to take the lead in training officers at all levels to maximize the portal’s potential.

Transformative Potential

With its real-time interface and advanced features, BHARATPOL promises to redefine crime prevention and investigation by:

  • Enabling faster extradition of fugitives.
  • Supporting state police forces in tackling cross-border crimes.
  • Addressing cybercrime challenges with greater speed and precision.
  • Enhancing India’s ability to coordinate with international agencies on a global scale.

Shri Shah described the portal as a game-changer, capable of redefining investigative processes and empowering young officers with cutting-edge tools to uphold justice.

Strengthening Law Enforcement Coordination

As the National Central Bureau for INTERPOL in India, the CBI plays a pivotal role in enabling international cooperation on criminal cases. BHARATPOL will modernize traditional methods of communication, such as letters and emails, ensuring faster and more efficient collaboration among INTERPOL Liaison Officers (ILOs), Unit Officers (UOs), and other stakeholders.

A Revolutionary Step Forward

The launch of BHARATPOL represents a significant stride in India’s commitment to combating transnational crimes and strengthening global cooperation. With its advanced capabilities and seamless integration with international networks, the portal is poised to make a lasting impact on India’s law enforcement landscape.

Shri Amit Shah concluded by urging all agencies to embrace this transformative platform, ensuring that justice prevails across borders and that India remains at the forefront of global crime control efforts.
